USB to Serial adapter

Almost any embedded electronics application use serial communication in some way. Most of the times it is used for easy debugging like on the Arduino. But what about your own projects when you have a TTL-leveled serial signal from your microprocessor that you would like to communicate with.

With this USB to Serial adapter you are able to connect any TTL-leveled microprocessor in the range from 3.3V to 5V to this serial adapter to communicate with the microprocessor thru a virtual serial port based on the USB CDC interface.
The USB to Serial adapter relies on the CP2102 chip which is a commonly used USB to Serial chip, similar to the FT232.

The adapter has a USB port in one end and a 90-degree turned male header with 6 pins:
  • RST - CP2102 chip reset
  • 3V3 - output power supply
  • 5V - output power supply
  • TXD - INPUT, which means TX on the microprocessor
  • RXD - OUTPUT, which means RX on the microprocessor
  • GND - common ground

The device should automatically enumerate and find the appropriate drivers on Windows Vista and Windows 7 computers. If not or on Windows XP drivers can be found here: CP210x_VCP_Win_XP_S2K3_Vista_7.exe

The adapter comes with a short 6-pin female to female cable as shown in the image for easy connection with your own electronics.
